  Sunrise reign supreme in FAO First Division League

Sunrise Club beat East Coast Railway 1-0 in the hard-fought final to lift the trophy in the FAO First Division Football League at Barabati Stadium here today. Prasanta Kumar Nayak scored the all-important goal in the 65th minute. Sunrise Club received a cash prize of Rs one lakh, while East Coast Railway settled with the runners-up prize of Rs 50,000.

Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan handed over the trophies in the presence of Odisha Sports Minister Sudam Marndi, Odisha Olympic Association secretary Asirbad Behera, East Coast Railway Divisional Manager S K Singh, Football Association of Odisha (FAO) president Debashish Samantaray and secretary Sanjay Behera.

Ten veteran footballers were felicitated at the closing function. They are Digbijay Das, Babaji Dalei, Agha Zaheer, Gopal Chandra Das, Narendra Kumar Sahoo, Amarendra Singh, Bishnu Charan Bose, Yudhisthira Sethi, Birabahadur Singh and Asit Kumar Patra.

 

Earlie in the semifinals, Sunrise edged out Independent Club 1-0, while East Coast Railway routed Radharaman Club 4-1. As many as 12 teams played a total of 30 super league matches to decided the four semifinal spots. The 12 teams qualified for the super league after finishing first or second in preliminary league, which featured a total of 26 teams. The preliminary league, featuring a total of 44 matches, was conducted by Football Association of Odisha (FAO) from June 18 to July 15.

The 12 super league teams were defending champions Radha Gobinda Club, Chand Club (from Group F); Independent Club, Radha Raman Club (from Group E); SAI Training Centre, State Sports Hostel (From Group D); East Coast Railway, Kishore Club (From Group C); Sunrise Club, Odisha Police (From Group B) and Mangala Club, Rising Star Club (From Group A).
