  Odisha players bag 12 medals in South Asian Games

Players from Odisha bagged as many as 12 medals in the 12th South Asian Games, which was held at Guwahati and Shillong from Feb 5. Medals included seven gold, four silver and one bronze.

Woman sprinter-cum-hurdler Jauna Murmu was most successful among Odisha sportspersons, pocketing two gold medals. She captured the two yellow metals in women 400m hurdles (57.69 secs) and 4x400m relay.

Sprinter Srabani Nanda was second most successful athlete, securing one gold and two silver medals. She stood first in women 200m (23.91 secs) and second in 100m sprint (11.72 secs) and 4x100m relay.

 

Woman sprinter Dutee Chand tasted modest success, grabbing two silver and one bronze medals. She finished second in 200m sprint (24.14 secs) and 4x100m relay and third in 100m sprint (11.75 secs).

Odisha woman hockey forward Punam Barla was a member of the Indian team that won the gold medal, mauling Sri Lanka in the final by 10-0 goals. Saraswati Rout, an employee of Indian Railway, became the first medallist from Odisha as she pocketed the gold in 58kg women weightlifting event. The second gold medal was claimed by Mandakini Majhi, who helped India beat Bangladesh in women kho-kho final.

India women football team, which won gold medal, trouncing Nepal 4-0 in final at Shillong, had four players from Odisha. They were Sasmita Malik, Manisha Panna, Supriya Routray and Pyari Xaxa.

Odisha defender Nilam Sanjeep Xess was a member of the Indian men hockey team that settled with silver medal after losing to Pakistan by a solitary goal in the final at Guwahati.
