  Army XI emerge All-India Kalinga Cup champions

Army-XI, Delhi emerged champions in the All-India Kalinga Cup Football Tournament, trouncing local team Bidanasi Club 5-1 in the lop-sided fina at Barabati Stadium here this evening. The champion team received a cash prize of Rs 3 lakh and the runner-up side Rs 2 lakh.

Odisha Cricket Association secretary Asirbad Behera and State Sports Secretary Saswat Mishra handed over the trophy and prizes in the presence of Police ADG Satyajit Mohanty and Football Association of Odisha secretary Sanjay Behera.

Chinmay Sekhar Behera won the prize as man of the tournament. Prizes for best forward, best mid-fielder, best defender and best goalkeeper were bagged by Arjun Tudu, Francis Jampapa, John and Sarat Narayan in the corresponding order.

 

Earlier in the semifinals, Army XI shocked Kolkata giants Mohammedan Sporting 5-4 in penalty shoot out, while giant-killers Bidanasi Club edged past Indian Railways by identical margin. Bidanasi Club caused a major upset in the quarterfinals, knocking out defending champions ONGC 4-2 in penalty shoot out.

Altogether 17 teams, including nine from outside the state participated in the tournament, which was jointly organised by Football Association of Odisha and State Sports & Youth Services Department from May 15. The tentative budget of Rs 43 lakh had been estimated for the staging of the tournament.

May 15 (Match No 1):
Sports Hostel, Cuttack (Simal Marandi 65th) beat Unit-VI Athletic Association, Bhubanaeswar (Onema 77th) 4-1 via penalty shoot out (Full time: 1-1).
May 16 (Match No 2): Radharaman Club, Cuttack (Lalmohan Hansdah 22nd, Abasi Moses 36th, Bayi Kamo 41st, 42nd) beat Birsingh Club, Jharsuguda (Sumit Munda 58th) 4-1.
May 16 (Match No 3):
Bidanasi Club, Cuttack beat East Coast Railway 3-1 in tie-breaker (Full time 0-0).
May 17 (Match No 4): Independent Club, Cuttack (Esike 86th) beat Gandhi Club, Sundargarh (Sankho Marandi 83rd) 5-3, via tie-breaker (Full time 1-1).
May 17 (Match No 5): Sports Hostel, Cuttack (Bhabagrahi Padhiary 3rd, Sujit Tirkey 95th) beat Sunrise Club, Cuttack 2-0.
May 18 (Match No 6): Bidanasi Club beat Oil India 4-3 in tie-breaker (Full time 0-0).
May 18 (Match No 7): Radha Raman Club, Cuttack (Abasi Moses 17th, 81st,  84th; Anand Lakra 83rd) beat Hyderabad XI 4-0.
May 19 (Match No 8): Army XI (Pranaya Ray 6th, 87th; Anthony Chhetri 69th) beat State Sports Hostel (Sunil Sardar 8th) 3-1.
May 19 (Match No 9):
Border Security Force (R Hembram 5th, Puspendu Dey 21st, P K Tiwari 64th) beat Independent Club (Kausik 36th) 3-1.
May 20 (Match No 10):
Bidanasi Club beat ONGC, Mumbai 4-2 in tie-breaker (Full time 0-0).
May 20 (Match No 11): Indian Railway, New Delhi (P C Rizu 22nd) beat Radha Raman Club 1-0.
May 21 (Match No 12): Army XI (Arjun Tudu 45th, 85th) beat Kalighat MS, Kolkata 2-0.
May 22 (Match No 13): Mohammedan Sporting, Kolikata (James Moga 13th, 29th; Pritam Singh 53rd, Tonmoy Ghosh 88th) beat BSF, Punjab (Nilamber Sa 21st) 4-1.
May 23 (Match No 14, SF): Bidanasi Club beat Indian Railways 5-4, via tie-breaker (Full time 0-0).
May 24 (Match No 15, SF): Army XI beat Mohammedan Sporting 5-4, via tie-breaker (Full time 0-0).
May 25 (Match No 16, Final): Army XI (Suresh Metei 22nd, Lalian Mawia 27th, Arunjit Metei 31st, Arjun Tudu 61st, 82nd) beat Bidanasi Club (Bijay Behera 88th) 5-1.
