  Grachev, Sanjeeban, Himanshu win KIIT Intl chess titles

Russia Grandmaster Boris Grachev emerged champion in the Elite category of the 9th KIIT International Chess Festival, which concluded at KIIT University here today. Grachev scored 8.5 points out of a possible 10 to take home the first prize of Rs 2 lakh. Grandmaster Ivan Popov (Russia), and Indian Candidate Master V S Rathanvel finished second and third respectively with 7.5 points each.

Popov received Rs 1 lakh, while Tamil Nadu boy Rathanvel was given Rs 80,000. A total of 201 players, including 13 Grand Masters, 2 Women Grand Masters, 14 International Masters, 1 Women International Master, 12 FIDE Masters, 1 Women FIDE Master and 9 Candidate Masters from 11 countries participated in the Elite category, which carried a total prize fund of Rs 10 lakh. Sidhant Mohapatra was the most successful Odisha player, securing ninth position with 7.5 points.

 

Elite category was the highest of this three-category tournament, which was organised by All Odisha Chess Association (AOCA) with KIIT University as the title sponsor. Overall 677 players took part in the eight-day tournament, which offered a total cash prize of Rs 19 lakh. Other two categories were: Platinum (1999 & below rating) and Premium (1550 & below rating), carrying prize fund of Rs 4.5 lakh each.

Odisha youngsters Sanjeeban Nayak, Subhasis Barik and Pranab Kumar Patra made a clean sweep of top three positions in the Platinum category. In the nine-round competition, the trio tied for the title with 7.5 points each. But on the basis of Buchholz tie-break method, Sanjeeban captured the title and the top prize of Rs 50,000.

Subhasis and Pranab settled with second and third prizes of Rs 40,000 and Rs 30,000 respectively. Altogether 188 players participated in the Platinum category, which concluded earlier on May 26.

Himanshu Ranjan of Bihar captured the title in the nine-round Premier category, logging eight points. He pocketed the top prize of Rs 50,000. Odisha duo Sarthak Debata and Aditya Ranjan Samal settled as first and second runner-up, garnering eight and 7.5 points respectively. As many as 288 players vied for honours in Premium category.

KIIT & KISS Founder Achyuta Samanta handed over the trophy and prizes in the closing function. Retired IAS officer S Srinivasan, AOCA president Sekhar Chandra Sahu, vice-president Ranjan Mohanty and secretary K K Sarma were present on the occasion.
