Odisha caused an upset in the ongoing Ranji Trophy Championship, beating last-year runners-up Saurashtra in their Group-B second round match on the fourth and final day at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad today. The hard-earned win fetched Odisha six points and increased their tally to seven from two outings.

Chasing a target of 212 runs for victory and resuming their second innings at the overnight score of 95 for five, Saurashtra were all out for 179. Three players put up sterling performance in the Odisha victory. Young opening batsman Sandeep Pattanaik scored his maiden first-class century in the first innings, while pacer Suryakant Pradhan returned with a match haul of eight wickets for 106 runs.

Put into bat by opposition captain Jaydev Shah, Odisha rode on the sparkling knock of 123 by Pattanaik to muster a respectable first-innings total of 228. Pattanaik faced 213 balls and hit 22 boundaries. In reply Saurashtra folded up for 186 to concede a lead of 42 runs. Basant Mohanty was most successful Odisha bowler in the first innings, taking four wickets for 58 runs.

In the second innings Odisha rode on a half-century by Subhranshu Senapati to post another modest total of 169. Senapati hit nine boundaries in is 101-ball knock of 57. Left-arm spinner Dhiraj Singh also made notable contribution for Odisha, taking five wickets in the match. Odisha will next meet Delhi at Mohali from October 27 to 30.

Odisha Cricket Association secretary Asirbad Behera congratulated the captain and all other members of the state team for their wonderful victory. He was highly impressed with the performance of Sandeep Pattnaik and Suryakant Pradhan. On this proud occasion the OCA secretary announced cash awards of Rs 50,000 each for Pattnaik and Pradhan.
