First-innings century by middle-order batsman Abhishek Yadav and a nine-wicket haul by Jamala Bhanja Mohapatra went in vain as Odisha suffered a 150-run defeat at the hands of Jharkhand on the fourth and last day of their Col C K Nayudu Trophy U-23 Plate Group-A match at Veer Surendra Sai Stadium in Sambalpur today.

Chasing a daunting target of 308 for victory, Odisha were all out for 157 in the second innings. The win fetched Jharkand six points while Odisha drew blank. This was the second defeat in three matches for Odisha, who will next play Chhattisgarh at Bhilai from October 31 to November 3.

Batting first, Jharkhand compiled a healthy total of 430. Opening batsman Shasheem and Mohammad Nazim Siddiqui scored a century each, while captain Wilfred Beng and Vishal Singh hit a half-century apiece. Jamala Bhanja Mohapatra was most successful bowler for Odisha, bagging five wickets for 74 runs.

In reply, Odisha made 308 to concede a lead of 122 runs. Abhishek Yadav rescued Odisha from a vulnerable position with his flamboyant knock of 148, which was embellished with 18 boundaries and two sixes. He steadied the Odisha innings, compiling 117 runs for the sixth wicket with Jamala Bhanja Mohapatra. The latter contributed a valuable 31 with the bat. Besides the duo, Debabrata Pradhan made a useful 22.

Odisha lost the match due to below-par batting performance in the second innings. Though five batsmen, including first-innings century-maker Yadav, got good starts, none among them could convert it to a big knock. Sonu Kumar Singh did maximum damage to the second innings of Odisha, picking up five wickets for 69 runs.
