  Ansu retains Utkal Open double crown; Hat-trick for Rutu

Local favourite Ansu Kumar Bhuyan won both the men’s singles and doubles titles for the second year to retain the double crown in the 4th All-Odisha Utkal Open Tennis Tournament, which was organised by Ace Tennis Club here at Kalinga Stadium from January 13 to 15. His achievements Ansu a total cash prize of Rs 15,000.

Ansu won the singles title, defeating experienced campaigner Ajay Kumar Nishank in straight sets. Ansu and Ajay claimed the doubles title, defeating Adarsh Sahoo and Abhilash Chandra Sahoo also in straight sets.

 

Rutuparna Choudhury achieved a hat-trick by emerging women’s singles champion for the third year in a row. She became richer by Rs 10,000. She outclashed her academy-mate Ameek Kiran Batth, conceding just one game. Abhishek Mohapatra bagged the under-14 boys’ singles crown, which carried a cash prize of Rs 8,000.

Saswat Jena and Hemadri Kanungo pocked the 40-plus veteran doubles title, while the same in 50-plus category went to Biranchi Narayan Mohanty and Rabindra Senapati. The top honour in 60-plus veterans’ section was won by Gyana Ranjan Das and J Ganta.

Abhishek Mohapatra bt Rabi Narayan Sahoo 9-3; D Aryan Swamy bt Md Arib Afzal 9-1. Final: A Mohapatra bt DA Swamy 10-2.
Men’s singles: Semifinals: Ansu Kumar Bhuyan bt Satirtha Patnaik 9-2; Ajay Kumar Nishank bt Kumar Anurag Saran 9-4. Final: AK Bhuyan bt AK Nishank 6-2, 6-2.
Men’s doubles: Semifinals: Ansu Bhuyan-Ajay Nishank bt Satirtha Patnaik-Asutosh Das 9-8(5); Adarsh Sahoo-Abhilash Chandra Sahoo bt Santosh Mallik-Vivek Tibarewal 9-7. Final: A Bhuyan-A Nishank bt A Sahoo-AC Sahoo 6-1, 6-1.
Women’s singles: Semifinals: Rutupatna Choudhury bt Komal Vishakha 8-0, Ameek Kiran Batth bt Aanam Almas 8-3. Final: R Choudhury bt AK Batth 6-1,6-0.
40-Plus Veteran doubles (Final): Saswat Jena-Himadri Kanung bt Pravanjan Mullick-Jhadeswar Das 9-5.
50-Plus Veteran doubles (Final): Biranchi Narayan Mohanty-Rabindra Senapati bt Ajay Sahu-JN Pattnaik 9-6.
60-Plus Veteran doubles (Final): Gyana Ranjan Das-J Ganta bt PK Bakshi-JN Pattnaik 8-5.
