  Rising Students FC finish IWL runners-up

Cuttack-based Odisha Club Rising Student’s FC finished runners-up in the inaugural edition of the Indian Women’s League (IWL) when they suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Eastern Sporting Union (Manipur) in the final at Ambedkar Stadium in Delhi today.

Coached by Bembem Devi, Eastern Sporting Union were awarded a cash prize of Rs 10 lakhs for being Champions while runners-up Rising Student’s Club were given Rs 5 lakhs. Jabamani Tudu (Rising Students) bagged the ‘Emerging Player Award’ of Rs. 75,000, Umapati Devi was awarded the ‘Most Valuable Player Award’ for Rs 1.25 lakh. For finishing top scorer with 11 goals, Kamala Devi was bagged a cheque Rs 1 lakh.
 

Earlier in the semifinals, Rising Student’s prevailed over FC Pune City 2-0, while Eastern Sporting Union thrashed Alakhpur FC. Both Rising Student and Eastern Sporting Union ended their league engagements with 12 points each from five matches.

But Rising Students occupied the top position in the points table on goal difference, while Eastern Sporting Union finished second. Alakhpura FC and FC Pune City also qualified for the semifinals, securing third and fourth positions respectively in the league table.

At the league stage, Rising Students won four matches and lost one. Led by AIFF Woman Player of the Year Sasmita Malik, Rising Students beat Jeppiaar Institute of Technology FC by 7-0, Aizwal XI 6-1, Eastern Sporting Union (Manipur) 2-1 and FC Pune City 5-0, but lost to Alakhpura FC 0-1.
