  Kalinga Lancers, Dabang Mumbai set up HIL summit clash

Bhubaneswar-based Odisha team, Kalinga Lancers will meet Dabang Mumbai in the final of the 5 th Hockey India League at Chandigarh tomorrow. In the semifinals at Chandigarh Hockey Stadium in Chandigarh today. Kalinga Lancers edged past Uttar Pradesh Wizards 4-3 in penalty shoot out, while Dabag Mumbai prevailed over Delhi Waveriders 2-0. Kalinga Lancers reached the final for second successive year, while Dabang Mumbai made it to the final for the first time. In the third and fourth placing match, Uttar Pradesh Wizards will play Delhi Waveriders.

It was Aran Zalewski who struck the golden goal for Kalinga Lancers in the sudden death. Lalit Upadhyay too scored twice in the shootout to help the Kalinga Lancers win the first semifinal. The hard-fought match went to the shootout stage after the 60-minute play ended in 4-4 draw. Kalinga Lancers goalkeeper Andrew Charter rose to the occasion with some incredible saves that saw his team through.

 

Uttar Pradesh took a 2-0 lead in the fourth minute when Arthur van Doren, who was awarded the FIH Rising Star of the Year 2016, was impeccable with his stick work to assist Florent van Aubel who effortlessly put the ball past Kalinga Lancers goalkeeper Andrew Charter. Kalinga Lancers reduced the deficit in the ninth minute when they won their first PC.

Though captain Moritz Fuerste couldn’t take the flick due to a miss trap, they quickly recovered with Aran Zalewski finding the rebound only to assist Devinder Walmiki who deflected the ball into the post ending the first quarter with the score reading 2-1 in favour of Uttar Pradesh Wizards.

Kalinga Lancers leveled the score when Fuerste, who is also a two-time Olympic gold medalist for Germany, came up with an incredible flick to send the ball past PR Sreejesh like a lightning in the 35th minute. The Bhubaneswar team took a 4-2 lead as Aussie forward Glenn Turner beat the Uttar Pradesh defenders to find Billy Bakker who scored a fine field goal. Wizards’ forward Akashdeep Singh scored a crucial field goal to equalize in the 58th minute.

Billy Bakker of Kalinga Lancers was awarded with a prize money of Rs 50,000 for scoring the Goal of the Match. Dipsan Tirkey of Kalinga Lancers won the prize of Rs 25,000 for being the Young Achiever of the Match .
The Most Entertaining Player of the Match was awarded to Florent van Aubel of Uttar Pradesh Wizards that came with a prize money of Rs 25,000. Andrew Charter of Kalinga Lancers was declared the Man of the Match and was awarded a prize money of Rs 50,000.
