  Kishore men, Hostel women lift Limka Memorial Trophy

Kishore Club men and Government Sports Hostel women emerged champions in the 3rd Limka Memorial Basketball Tournament, which concluded here at Unit-1 Basketball Complex today. Kishore Club came from behind to edge out Kalinga Basketball Club in the exciting men’s final 68-64. Govt Sports Hostel finished third in men’s category, defeating KIIT University 74-70.

In women’s category, Sports Hostel won all three of their league matches to finish at the top of the table with six points. In their last league game, they posted an emphatic 45-23 win over KIIT University. KIIT University settled as runners-up, while Mother’s Basketball Club finished third.

 

The three-day tournament was jointly organised by Bhubanswar Basketball Association (BBA) and Khurda District Basketball Association. Rural Development Secretary Madhusudan Padhi and Bhubaneswar Central MLA Bijay Kumar Mohanty handed over the trophies at the closing function. BBA president Maqbul Ali, KDBA secretary Prasant Kumar Nayak and match commissioner Rajendra Prasad Pani were present on the occasion.

Nirlipta Parida (Kishore Club) and Urbashi Mallick (Sports Hostel) were adjudged as Player of the Tournament in men and women groups respectively. Rudrakant Sahoo (Sports Hostel) bagged the prize as Promising Player of the Tournament.

The tournament, featuring seven teams in boys category and four in girls, was staged in the memory of former Odisha basketball player Syed Waqar Yunu, who was fondly known as Limka and passed away on 20th October, 2013. Veteran athlete Pradipta Ranjan Patnaik inaugurated the tournament in the presence of Limka’s elder sister Nagma Ali and tournament coordinator Prasanta Kumar Nayak.

Men: Final:
Kishore Club (Chiranjit Karan 18, Nirlipta Parida 14) beat Kalinga Basketball Club (Satyakam Yadav 20, Safalya Patra 10) 68-64. Third place: Govt Sports Hostel (Rudrakanta Sahu 20, Asisan Bada 15, Soumya Ranjan Sahoo 10) beat KIIT University (Avishek Das 26, Subham Samal 20) 74-70.
Women: Last league match: Govt Sports Hostel (Urbashi Mallick 14, Jayashree Baskey 13) beat Mother’s Basketball Club (Meenakshi Kar 10) 45-23.
