23 Apr 2017 BHUBANESWAR

A 10-member Odisha squad has bagged one silver and three bronze medals in the 14th Youth National Athletics Championship, held at GMC Balayogi Stadium, Gochibowli, Hyderabad from April 21 to 23, 2017.

The three-day championship served as the selection criteria for the upcoming Asian and World Youth Athletics Championships, scheduled to be held in Bangkok (Thailand) and Nairobi (Kenya) respectively.

Punga Soren of Cuttack secured the lone silver medal in 110m hurdles with a timing of 14.15 seconds. This was a remarkable performance by Punga, who had established a new meet record, clocking 14.2 seconds in the Odisha State Athletics Championship earlier this month at Cuttack.

Swadhin Kumar Majhi secured one bronze medal in boys’ high jump event with a career-best jump of 1.96 metre. This was the first national medal for Angul lad Swadhin, who had won the gold medal in the recent State Athletic Championship with an effort of 1.93 metre.

Manisha Merel of Sundargard claimed the other bronze medal in girls’ long jump event with a leap of 5.46 metre. Deepali Mohapatra of Nayagard narrowly missed the podium as she finished fourth in girls’ 100 metre sprint. Prasanjit Xaxa of Bhubaneswar pocketed the third bronze medal for the state in boys’ 400 metre hurdles, clocking 56.71 seconds.
