Dutee wins bronze in Asian GP, loses her car
24 Apr 2017 BHUBANESWAR

Leading a 16-member Indian athletics squad in the first of the three-leg Asian Grand Prix 2017, ace Odisha sprinter Dutee Chand won the women’s 100 metre bronze medal with a timing of 11.59 seconds at Jinhua in China today.

But amidst the success, Dutee received a shock as her Nano car, which was presented to her by the then Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav in 2013, was set on fire by unidentified miscreants at Gopalpur village, her native place, in Jajpur district the previous night.

The car held importance for Dutee as it was the first four-wheeler presented to her as prize in her athletics career. At that time, she had faced a lot of difficulties to bring the vehicle to Odisha and was eventually helped by Odisha Cricket Association’s the then secretary Ashirbad Behera.

Meanwhile, it was woman shot putter Manpreet Kaur, who stole the show at the Jinhua GP, bagging the gold medal with a national record-breaking effort of 18.86 metre. Manpreet, the lady from Patiala who makes the iron ball look like a feather ball, also jumped to the top of the world list. The 26-year-old, whose previous best of 17.96 came in Kolkata two years ago, is now ahead of American Michelle Carter (18.54m) in the IAAF World list for the event.

Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, the under-20 world champion and world record holder, however, settled with the silver medal with an 82.11 metre effort. The teenager from Panipat had scripted history and created a Junior World Record of 86.48 metre last year but could not improve upon it today.

In the women’s Long Jump, Neena Varakil won the silver medal with a leap of 6.46 metres. National Record holder Tintu Luka of Kerala won the silver in the women`s 800m event, finishing with a time of 2.03.50. Another athlete from Kerala, Jinson Johnson, grabbed the silver medal in the men’s 800m with timing of 1.50.71.

Om Prakash Singh Karhana took home the bronze in the men’s shot put event with a throw of 18.41 metres. In all, Indian athletes bagged a total of seven medals. The second leg of the Asian Gran Prix will take place in Jianxing on the 27th April. The third and final leg will be held in Chinese Taipei on the 30th April 2017.
