  Powerlifters felicitated for bagging 31 Natl medals

Odisha Powerlifting Association (OPA) and Utkal Karate School today jointly felicitated members of the state squad for bagging a total of 31 medals in the Subrata Classic National Powerlifting, Benchpress & Deadlift Championship 2017, which was held at Jammu from March 21 to 24. The medals included 17 gold, six silver and eight bronze.

OPA vice-president Hari Prasad Pattanayak, secretary Chitta Ranjan Swain and treasurer Debashish Acharya were present in the felicitation function, held here at Utkal Karate School. The 40-member Odisha squad, which included coach Gangadhar Bisoyi and manager Saroj Kumar Das, also emerged team champions in both men and women sections.

 

Priyadarshini Bisoyi won one gold in senior women’s 72kg category, lifting 160kg in squat, 75kg in benchpress, 170kg in deadlift for a total of 405kg. Priyadarshini’s majestic performance fetched her the `Strong Woman of India’ title. She was also selected for Asian trial.

Debi Singh emerged `Strong Woman of India’ first runner-up, bagging one gold medal each in 53kg senior and junior categories. She lifted a total of 325kg, which included 115kg in squat, 67.5kg in benchpress and 142.5kg in deadlift. Debi also captured gold in senior deadlift and silver in benchpress events.

Samarendra Mohanta pocketed one gold in senior men’s 59kg group with a total lift of 482.5kg (squat 167.5kg, benchpress 105kg, deadlift 210kg) and another gold in deadlift. Basant Maleka won gold in junior men’s 53kg class with a total lift of 430kg (squat 155kg, benchpress 95kg and deadlift 180kg).

Rajesh Bhukta secured one gold in junior men’s 93kg group with a total effort of 647.5 kg (squat 237.5kg, benchpress 150kg, deadlift 260kg) and another gold in deadlift. Simarani Singh bagged one gold in junior women’s 43kg category with a total lift of 230kg (squat 72.5kg, benchpress 50kg, deadlift 107.5kg).

Laxmimani Singh earned one gold each in junior and senior women’s 47kg sections, lifting a total of 285kg (squat 92.5kg, benchpress 62.5kg, deadlift 130kg). She also bagged one gold each in senior benchpress and deadlift events. Besides all these medals, Laxmimani was named `Strong Woman of India’ second runner-up in deadlift.

Sangita Singh acquired one gold in senior women’s above 84kg group with a total lift of 342.5kg (squat 137.5kg, benchpress 62.5kg, deadlift 142.5kg). Jitendra Behera claimed gold in masters-two 74kg section, lifting a total of 475kg (squat 165kg, benchpress 120kg, deadlift 190kg) and another gold in benchpress.

Vijaya Chakravarty procured one silver in master-one 72kg benchpress category with a lift of 120kg. BTV Ramanamurty collected one silver medal in master-one 72kg deadlift category with a lift of 195kg. Sangram Behera picked up one silver medal in junior men’s 83kg group with a total lift of 620kg (squat 230kg, benchpress 137.5kg, deadlift 252.5kg).

Rupali Palel secured one silver medal each in junior and senior women’s 47kg group with a total lift of 222kg (squat 90kg, benchpress 52.5kg, deadlift 130kg). Sonu Sahoo claimed one bronze medal in senior men’s 59kg division, lifting a total of 457.5kg (squat 157.5kg, benchpress 100kg, deadlift 200kg).

Deepak Kumar Nayak captured one bronze medal in junior men’s 93kg category with a total lift of 607.5kg (squat 215kg, benchpress 142.5kg, deadlift 250kg). Parimal Sona procured one bronze in junior men’s 83kg deadlift section with an effort of 200kg.

Ansuman Behera pocketed one bronze in junior men’s 83kg benchpress section with a lift of 135kg. Basant Kumar Bindhani grabbed one bronze in master-one 93kg deadlift category with a lift of 200kg. Dipansu Sahu won one bronze each in junior men’s 120kg benchpress (100kg) and deadlift (200kg). Chandrabadani Mohanta procured one bronze in women’s 63kg weight class with a total lift of 347.5kg (squat 120kg, benchpress 80kg, deadlift 147.5kg).

Though OPA selected a 40-member squad, including, including coach Gangadhar Bisoyi and manager Saroj Kumar Das for the Jammu National Championship, around five powerlifters pulled out for several reasons.
