Dinku, Megha bag Sub-jr National compound titles
20 Mar 2017 BHUBANESWAR

Puksrambam Dinku Singh and Megha Agarwal were crowned champions in 50+50 metre compound boys’ and girls’ divisions respectively on the penultimate day of the 37th Sub-junior National Archery Championship here at Kalinga Stadium today.

Services lad Dinku Singh, who hails from Imphal and hones his skills at Mechanised Infantry Regimental Centre, Ahmedabad (Maharashtra), took the gold with a total score 694. Ayuvan Singh (Rajasthan) and Mayank Rawat (Haryana) secured the silver and bronze with 682 and 678 points respectively.

Already an international, Dinku said the title triumph here would spur him to do well in the Junior World Championship, scheduled to be held later this year in Argentina. ``Now I am preparing for the World meet under the guidance of my coach Brijesh Kumar. I am very focused on the target ahead and winning the gold here has boosted my confidence,’’ stated Dinku, who won one silver and one bronze in the 2016 Asia Cup.

Maharashtra lass Megha, a trainee of Pune-based Archers’ Academy, too admitted that today’s gold medal performance would encourage her to work hard for the 2018 Asian Games. ``I have been longing to win a medal in the Asain Games next year. My performance today convinced me and my coach Ranjeet Chamle that I am on right track,’’ said Megha, who has bagged 15 national medals so far and represented India in 2015 Youth World Cup.

While Megha grabbed the 50+50m compound title with a total score of 664, the fight for the silver and bronze went to the tie-breaker as Delhi duo Navya Kalra and Somya Negi finished with 662 points each. But in the tie-breaker, Navya held her nerve to capture the silver with a score of 31, three more than Somya, who contended herself with the bronze.

Though a medal continued to elude Odisha for the second successive day, the host state brightened its chances of increasing their collection to more than one on the concluding day tomorrow. Odisha had secured the lone bronze medal on the opening day with Rajesh Durua finishing third in boys’ 20m Indian Round.
