06 Sep 2017 BHUBANESWAR

Promising Odisha pace bowler Preet Kanwar Singh Chohan and BCCI Level-1 umpire Sarat Chandra Sahoo were conferred with the Saroj Mahasurara Memorial Award for the year 2017 in a special function held here at Town Club ground today.

The awards were handed over by State Culture & Tourism Minsiter Ashok Chandra Panda, Bhubaneswar Mayor Ananta Narayan Jena, former India swing bowler Debasis Mohanty and eminent cricket coach Kishore Chandra Mania in the presence of Bhubaneswar Athletic Association joint-secretary Naba Ranjan Patnaik, local Corporator Biranchi Narayan Mahasupakar and Saroj Mahasuara Memorial Committee convenor Manoj Mohapatra.

A promising pace bolwer, Preet has been performing well after making his Odisha U-19 debut in the season 2015-16. He ended the 2016-17 season as one of the top three junior pace bowlers of the country, bagging 27 wickets from five matches in Cooch Behar Trophy U-19 Tournament. Son of former Odisha cricketer and selector Gurjit Singh Chohan, Preet received coaching from Australia pace legend Glenn McGrath at MRF Pace Foundation in Chennai this year.

A club and district level cricket alrounder, Sarat Sahoo started his umpiring career in the year 2002. He has the credit of officiating over 100 national and 1000 state level matches so far. Sahoo qualified as state-panel umpire in 2006 and BCCI-panel umpire in 2011.

Preet became the 15th player to receive the Upcoming Cricketer Award, which was instituted in the year 2004, in the memory of umpire Saroj Mahasuara, who died in a road accident in 2002 while returning home after officiating a match in Cuttack. Sahoo became the ninth official to bag the outstanding umpire award, which was introduced in the year 2009.
