Host KIIT University and Utkal University won one titles each in the East Zone Inter-University Badminton (Men & Women), Basketball (Men), Volleyball (Men) and Tennis (Men) Tournament, which was held here in KIIT University campus from October 1 to 4, 2017.
KIIT emerged champion in men’s tennis, while Utkal triumphed in men’s volleyball. KIIT and Utkal also finished runners-up in men’s volleyball and basketball respectively. Durg University bagged a double, claiming titles in men’s basketball and badminton. The top honour in women’s badminton was pocketed by Dibrugarh University.

Around 3100 players and officials from 250 universities participated in the multi-discipline tournament, which was inaugurated by KIIT & KISS founder Prof Achyuta Samanta, in the presence of Olympian Dutee Chand. Prof Samant also handed over the prizes in the closing function. International woman athlete Purnima Hembram and KIIT University Registrar Prof Sasmita Samanta were present on the occasion.
The top four finishers of the East Zone tournament qualified to compete in the All-India Inter-Zone Inter-University Tournaments for the year 2017-18. The All-India Inter-Zone tournaments in badminton (m/w), basketball (m) and tennis (m) will be held at KIIT University from Dec 26 to 30, 2017, while that in volleyball will take place at Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh in March 2018.
