Rajesh, Debasish slam tons in drawn U-23 match
11 Oct 2017 BHUBANESWAR

After conceding a 172-run first-innings lead, host Odisha rode on a century each by Rajesh Dhuper and Debasish Samantray to draw their truncated C K Nayudu Trophy U-23 Plate Group-B match against Chhattisgarh at Gandhi Stadium in Balangir today. But Chhattisgarh gained three points by virtue of taking the first-innings lead while Odisha settled with one point.

Resuming at the overnight score of 247 for five, Chhattisgarh declared their first innings at 283 for seven. Bundled out for 111 in the first innings, the home team, however, spoiled the opposition hope for an outright wins as they bounced back into the game by putting up excellent batting performance in the second essay. They were 272 for three in their second innings when the fourth and last day’s play came to an end.

Opening batsman Rajesh Dhuper, who top-scored in the first innings with a 134-ball 36, again led the Odisha fight-back by hitting a 226-ball 123, which included 15 fours and three sixes. He put on 99 runs for the opening wicket with Abinash Nayak (30) and another 106 for the second wicket with Debasish Samantray, who struck an unbeaten 106 (110b, 8x4, 5x6).

The match started 2.00 pm on the second day after play on the opening day was called off without a ball bowed due to rain and wet outfield. Put into bat by Chhattisgarh captain Shakeeb Ahmed, Odisha got off to a vulnerable start, losing opener Debasish Samantray with only 12 runs on the board. Though Dhuper stood firm at one end, wickets continued to fall at the other in regular intervals.

TEAM ANNOUNCED FOR NEXT MATCH: Meanwhile, Odisha Cricket Association made two changes in the state under-23 team for their second Plate Group-B match of the Col C K Nayudu Trophy Cricket Tournament against Madhya Pradesh, scheduled to be played at Indore from October 15 to 18, 2017.

State Ranji team’s opening batsman Sandeep Pattanaik and allrounder Subhranshu Senapati replaced  Amrit Khatua and Ayaskant Panda in the 15-member under-23 team. Sandeep failed to open his account in the only innings Odisha got to play in their drawn Ranji match against Tripura, while Subhranshu did not bat.
