  Sub-jr Women Boxing Natls: Odisha win 3 medals

A five-member Odisha squad, fielded by newly formed Boxing Odisha, bagged a total of three medals in the 8th Sub-junior Women National Boxing Championship, which was held at Udaipur in Rajasthan from October 8 to 11, 2017. The medals included one siver and two bronze.

Puri girl Bhabani Barik captured the silver medal in A-10, 46-48kg category after losing to M Sivapriya of Tamil Nadu in the final 0-2. Bhabani reached the final by trouncing Jay Shree Chauhan (MP) 5-0 in the quarterfinals and Neha Show (WB) 4-1 in the semifinals.

 

Sarmila Thapa and Arati Gope secured the two bronze medals by reaching semifinals in D-3, 32-34kg and C-5, 36-38kg categories respectively. Competing in the semifinals directly, Sarmila lost to Antima (Haryana) 0-5, while Arati went down to Shivani (Jharkhand) 0-1.

Joshada Purty and Pramila Thapa, the other two Odisha boxers in the fray, lost in the quarterfinals. Anakapalli Manasav Veni (AP) beat Joshada 4-1 in D-5, 36-38kg category, while Pramila went down to Manisha (Jharkhand) 0-5 in A-11, 48-50kg group.

Boxing Odisha president T Krishna Patro, vice-president Sukhendu Kumar Das, secretary Kabiraj Gouda, Puri Boxing Academy secretary Sudarsan Sahu and State boxing coach Sankar Prasad Adhikari congratulated the Odisha boxers for their impressive success. Odisha squad was accompanied by manager Purandar Giri.
