  HWL2017: India hold Australia to 1-1 draw

Host India held defending champions Australia to 1-1 draw, while Germany resistered a 2-0 convincing win over England on the opening day of the Men’s Hockey World League Finals here at Kalinga Hockey Stadium today.

In between the two matches, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik unveiled the glittering trophy of the tournament amidst dance, music, laser show and fireworks. International Hockey Federation president Narinder Dhruv Batra and Odisha Sports Minister Chandra Sarathi Behera were present on the occasion.

RESULTS:
Dec 1 (Match No 1):
Germany (Mats Grambusch 19-FG, Christopher Ruhr 25-FG) beat England 2-0. Man of the match: Mats Grambusch (GER). Junior Player of the Match: Julius Meyer (GER).
Dec 1 (Match No 2): India (Mandeep Singh 20-FG) drew with Australia (Jeremy Hayward 21-PC) 1-1. MoM: Matt Dawson (AUS). JPoM: Dipsan Tirkey (IND).

 

RECORDS & MILESTONES:
*     Germany captain Martin Häner made his 200th international appearance in the match against England.
*     Spain umpire Eduardo Lizana, who conducted the opening match between Germany and England, was awarded his Golden Whistle in recognition of umpiring 100 international matches, a marker he reached in Glasgow, Scotland earlier this year.
*     Indian captain Manpreet Singh made his 200th senior international appearance in the match against Australia.
