  Men’s HWL: Aussies retain title; India win bronze

Australia retained the Men’s World Hockey League title, edging out Olympic champions Argentina 2-1 in the final of the finals here at Kalinga Stadium today. Host India also retained the bronze medal, defeating Germany by 2-1 identical margin earlier in the day.

Hosted by Odisha Government, under the auspices of Hocey India, the 10-day-long hockey extravaganza proved to be resounding success. This was the third and last edition of the World Hockey League and the International Hockey Federation event will resurface in a new format named as Pro Hockey League next year.

 

The conluding day’s programme was graced by a number of luminaries from both the State and Unior Government. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik handed over the medals to the Indian team before the start of the final match. He also announced a cash award of Rs 10 lakh for each player and head coach of the Indian team and Rs 5 lakh for each member of the support staff.

The gold and silver medals along with best individual awards were given away by Odisha Governor S C Jamir, Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore. Odisha Sports Minister Chandra Sarathi Behera and International Hockey Federation president Dr Narendra Dhruv Batra were present on the occasion.

RESULTS:
Dec 10 (Match 21, Bronze medal):
India (SV Sunil 21-FG, Harmanpreet Singh 54-PC) beat Germany (Mark Appel 36-FG) 2-1. PoM: Mats Grambusch (Germany). JoPM: Harmanpreet Singh (India).
Dec 10 (Match No 22, Final): Australia (Jeremy Hayward 17-PC, Blake Govers 58-PC) beat Argentina (Agustin Bugallo 18-FG) 2-1. PoM: Juan Gilardi (Argentina). JPoM: Lachlan Sharp (Australia).

INDIVUDIAL AWARDS: Best Player of the Tournament: Mats Grambusch (Germany). Best Goalkeeper: Juan Vivaldi (Argentina). Best Junior Player: Victor Wegnez (Belgium). Top Scorer: Loick Luypaert (Belgium).

FINAL RANKINGS: 1. Australia, 2. Argentina, 3. India, 4. Germany, 5. Belgium, 6. Spain, 7. Netherlands, 8. England.
