Churchill BFC, Gokulam KFC win Super Cup qualifiers
15 Mar 2018 BHUBANESWAR

Churchill Brothers SC and Gokulam Kerala FC won the first two qualifying matches of the 1st Super Cup 2018, the main club football tournament of India, which commenced here at the floodlit Kalinga Stadium today. Churchill Brothers came from behind to beat Delhi Dynamos FC 2-1, while Gokulam Kerala prevailed over North East United FC 2-0.

Both the winners entered the main draw of the tournament, scheduled to begin with pre-quarterfinals here on March 31. Churchill Brothers will face Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan on April 1, while Gokulam Kerala will take on Bengaluru FC also on April 1.

After Delhi Dynamos took the lead through Nigerian Kalu Uche in the fifth minute, Trinidadian Willis Plaza scored both the goals for Churchill Brothers, the first in the 32nd minute and the second in the second half of the extra time (106th minute). Plaza received the man of the match prize of Rs 25,000.

In the second match of the day, Ugandan striker Henry Kisseka scored in either side of halftime (43rd, 75th) to clinch victory for I-League debutants Gokulam Kerala FC. However, Gokulam goalkeeper Nikhil Barnard pocketed the man of the match prize for saving at least two goals.

The opening day of the Super Cup failed to generate public interest as both the qualifying matches were played with almost empty stands. This surely caused worries for joint hosts Govt of Odisha and Football Association of Odisha and showing a special gesture the Sports & Youth Services Department announced to distribut 4000 tickets free of cost for the last two qualifying games tomorrow.

According to Sports Department OSD Chanchal Rana, the 4000 tickets will be distributed on first-come-first-serve basis at Kalinga Stadium box office (Gate No 3) tomorrow from 10.00 am. Mumbai City FC will meet Indian Arrows in the third qualifier at 5.00 pm, while ATK (Kolkata) will lock horns with Chennai City FC in the fourth and last at 8.00 pm.
