  Jayanti wins silver-bronze double in Asian Para Games

Jayanti Behera, the most successful disable athlete of Odisha, clinched a double or sorts by winning one silver and bronze medal each in the 3rd Asian Para Games, being held at Jakarta, Indonesia from October 6.

She first grabbed the bronze medal in women’s 200m T45/46/47 event on October 9 with a timing of 27.45 seconds. Chinese sprinters bagged top two positions in the event with Li Lu taking gold in 25.82 seconds and Wang Yanping securing siver in 26.45 seconds.

Jayanti followed her 200m bronze medal with silver medal in 400m T45/46/47 event, clocking 59.71 seconds today. She credited his medal achievement to the blessings of Lord Jagannath and love and affection of the people of Odisha. But Jayanti finished fifth in 100m event with a timing of 13.55 seconds on October 10.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik congratulated Jayanti for the bronze medal win and announced a prize of Rs 10 lakh for her. Jayanti, who is a resident of Sakhigopal in Puri district, is a part of the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), a flagship program of the Unior Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India.

She had earlier won one gold and one silver medal in World Junior Para Athletics Championships at Notwill, Switzerland in August 2017. She also claimed one silver medal in the Asian Youth Para Athletic Championship at Dubai in 2017.
