  Asiad 2018: Vinesh Phogat wins historic wrestling gold

Vinesh Phogat created history today by becoming the first Indian female wrestler to win a gold medal at the Asian Games. Vinesh achieved the glorious feat beating Japan’s Yuki Irie 6-2 in 50kg freestyle category of the ongoing 18th Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Apart from the gold, India bagged two silver on the second day to increase their total number of medals to five, which include another silver and one bronze. Both the silver medals came in shooting events with Deepak Kumar achieving it in men’s 10m air rifle  and 19-year old Lakshay Sheoran getting the same in men`s trap.

 

In other key results, both men and women’s badminton teams lost in quarterfinals against Indonesia and Japan respectively by 1-3 identical margin. The seven-time gold-winner Indian men’s kabaddi team were stunned by Korea 23-24. However, the men’s hockey team thrashed Indonesia 17-0 in their opening match.

Female wrestlers Pooja Dhanda and Sakshi Malik lost their respective bronze medals matches. Indian male gymnastics team, featuring Rakesh Patra of Odisha, missed out on team final by just 0.35 points.
