  MoU`s inked for High Performance Centres in Odisha

In its endeavour to achieve sporting excellence, Odisha Government, through Sports and Youth Services Department, signed Memorandum of Understandings with 10 leading industrialists here at Kalinga Hockey Stadium this evening. According to the MoUs, these would sponsoring setting up of High Performance Centres (HPC) in seven sporting disciplines.

This move is supposed to enable the state encourage and nurture talent in the field of sports from all parts of India. The HPCs will have the necessary infrastructure and support services needed by an individual to realize their potential. They will now have a fair chance at training that will match international standards.

 

Following sports were sponsored by the following industries who have their own Foundation for Youth Sports.

Athletics: Reliance Industries Group
Badminton: Dalmia Cement (Bharat) Ltd & Pullela Gopichand Badminton Foundation.
Football and Swimming: JSW Sports & Bengaluru FC.
Football: All India Football Federation & Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation of Odisha (IIDCO)/Odisha Sports Development and Promotion Company (OSDPC).
Hockey: Tata Steel and Tata Trusts
Shooting: Aditya Birla Group and Gagan Narang Sports Promotion Foundation.
Weightlifting: KJS Ahluwalia Group and TENVIC Sports for Weightlifting.
Advanced Medical Rehabilitation Centre: Rungta Mines Ltd & Abhinav Futuristics.
Centre of Excellence Sports Management: Xavier-Emlyon Business School for.

The glittering MoU-Signing Event began at high-tea with a welcome speech by State Sports Minister Chandra Sarathi Behera and continued till early evening, with almost all leading dignitaries gracing the podium with their speeches regarding their foundation and efforts that will be undertaken by them to promote their chosen sports.

Speaking about this move, DSYS Commissioner- cum-Secretary Vishal Kumar Dev said: “It is great day not just for the state but for the country as well. This move was long overdue in order to fully develop the quality of sport and sportsmen in the country. By signing these MoUs we have built a framework which will work towards sporting education, talent identification at grass root levels and infrastructural development at a global level.’’

Commenting on the signing of the MoUs Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said, “The signing of the MoU has created a long-lasting partnership which will result in producing sportspersons of world standards.”

Present at the event were dignitaries like Indian Olympic Association/ International Hockey Federation president Dr Narendra Batra, Dalmia Bharat Group CMD Puneet Dalmia, badminton legend Pullela Gopichand (for PGBF), JSW Chairman Sajjan Jindal, shooting legend Gagan Narang (for GNSPF), former India cricket captain Anil Kumble (Founder, TENVIC Sports), Hockey India CEO Elena Norman, film star and Rugby India Board member Rahul Bose.

Apart from the signing of the MoUs, the lavish event also saw the unveiling of the Hockey Men’s World Cup Trophy by the Odisha Chief Minister and FIH president, followed by fireworks and musical concert by singer Sukhwinder Singh.
