  Sambit, Ananya capture State Junior chess titles

Bhubaneswar boy Sambit Panda and Bhubaneswar girl Ananya Anamika emerged champions in the Odisha State Junior (U-19) Chess Championship, which was held at Sanskruti Bhavan in Puri on November 12 and 13, 2018. Total 46 players from seven districts participated in the five-round tournament, which was organised by District Chess Association of Puri (DCAP), under the aegis of All Odisha Chess Association (AOCA).

In the open category, Sambit scored 4.5 points out of a possible five, while Aditya Ranjan Samal of Sundargarh finished runner-up with four points. Ananya topped the table with 4.5 points in girls category, half-a-point ahead of local contestant Anoushkaa Mohanty, who settled as runner-up with four points.

 

AOCA secretary Krushna Kumar Sharma inaugurated the championship, while Sri Mandir Governing Body member Ramakrushna graced the closing ceremony as chief guest. Puri District Athletic Association secretary Rabi Shankar Pratihari, DCAP vice-president Suresh Chandra Sahoo, secretary Pradyumna Mishra and tournament director Subhash Chandra Sahoo were present on the occasion.

Top four finishers in each category qualified to represent Odisha State in the National Junior Chess Championship, scheduled to be held at Arya Samaj Bhawan in New Delhi from Nov 28 to Dec 6, 2018.
