Host Bengal defeated Odisha by nine wickets on the third and last day in their opening league match of the Vijay Merchant Trophy East Zone U-16 Cricket Tournament at Jadavpur University Ground in Kolkata today. The win fetched Bengal six points, while Odisha drew blank.
Chasing 112 for victory, Bengal romped home, losing one wicket in the second innings. Earlier in their first-innings, Bengal rode on century by Abishek Porel to make 224, in reply to modest total of 165 by Odisha, who chose to bat first after winning the toss.
Odisha made 170 in the second innings after conceding a first-innings lead of 59 runs. Ashutosh Chhuria was the most successful Odisha player, taking six wickets for 70 in the first innings and one for 30 in the second essay.
