  Khelo India Youth Games: Odisha finish 18th with 15 medals

Odisha bagged a total of 15 medals to finish 18th in the 2nd Khelo India Youth Games, which was held at Pune and Mumbai from January 7 to 20, 2019. The 15 medals included: three gold, six silver and six bronze. Hosts Maharashtra topped the medals tally with 85 gold, 61 silver, 81 bronze for a total of 227.

Weightlifters proved themselves most successful for Odisha, fetching the state two gold and two silver medals. Odisha won one gold and two bronze in hockey. The gold medal was captured by the state under-21 boys team, while the two bronze medals were brought by the under-17 boys and girls teams.

Athletes fetched Odisha one silver and one bronze medals. Odisha also won one silver and bronze each in swimming, one siver each in football, gymnastics and one bronze each in judo and kho-kho.

 

Swimmer Pratyasa Ray became a multiple medallist for Odisha, bagging one silver and one bronze in under-17 girls 50 and 100 metre backstroke events respectively. She clocked 32.02 seconds in 50 metre and 1:10.61 seconds in 100 metre respectively.

Among Odisha athletes, Pragyan Prasanti Sahu secured the silver medal in under-21 girls 100m hurdles, clocking 14.38 seconds. The bronze medal was grabbed by Manisha Merel in under-21 girls long jump with an effort of 5.83 meter.

Artistic gymnast Jagdish Barik won the silver medal in under-17 boys table vault. Judoka Rajesh Sahoo of Bhubaneswar secured the bronze in under-21 boys below 60kg category.

Odisha U-17 girls football pocketed silver medal after losing to Jharkhand in the final by 1-2 goals. Earlier, Odisha posted a 2-1 win over Manipur in their last-four match. Deepa Nayak and Sarita Soreng scored the two goals against Manipur. Odisha reached semifinals, defeating Maharashtra 2-0, Himachal Pradesh and Kerala 5-1 with a record margin of 36-0.

The bronze medal in kho-kho was secured by U-21 girls team, defeating Delhi on sudden attack after play in regulation time ended in tie. In their earlier matches, Odisha girls beat Karnataka 18-6 and Gujarat 15-14, but lost to Maharashtra in the semifinals.

KIYG is the national level multidisciplinary grassroot games in India held for two categories, namely under-17 years school and under-21 college students. Every year best 1000 kids will be given an annual scholarship of Rs 5 lakh for 8 years to prepare them for the international sporting events.
