  KIYG Hockey: Odisha bag 3 medals in hockey

Odisha gathered three medals in the hockey competition of the 2nd Khelo India Youth Games, held at Mumbai and Pune from January 7 to 20, 2019. The medals included one gold and two bronze. Odisha under-21 boys won gold medal, while the under-17 boys and under-17 girls captured bronze.

Led by Nilam Sanjeep Xess, Odisha U-21 team beat Haryana 6-4 in the final via shootout (4-2) and play in regulation time ended in 2-2 draw. Odisha won the bronze medal in the under-17 boys competition, defeating Uttar Pradesh 3-2 via shootout after play in regulation time ended in goalless draw at Mumbai today.

 

Earlier, Odisha under-17 boys suffered a heart-breaking defeat against Punjab in their semifinal, which was decided in the shoot out after play in the regulation time ended in 2-2 draw. In the shoot out, Punjab won 4-3.

Odisha U-17 girls team captured the bronze medal, beating Punjab by 3-2 goals. Earlier in the semifinals, the under-17 girls squandered a 3-0 lead to go down to Jharkhand 3-4. In the league stage, they beat Maharashtra 5-3 and Mizoram 4-2 but lost to Haryana 2-3 in Pool B.

However, Odisha U-21 girls returned empty handed after finishing fourth. They ended their campaign in the bronze-medal match, losing to Punjab 1-2. The under-21 girls reached semifinals, edging out Maharashtra in shoot out. Earlier they were held to draw in all three of their pool league matches.
