  Asia Rugby 7s Trophy: Indian women win silver medal

A 12-member Indian women team, consisting of four players from Odisha, won silver medal in the Asia Rugby Sevens Trophy, which was held at GBK Sports Complex in Jakarta, Indonesia on 10 and 11 August, 2019. The gold medal was captured by Philippines.

Indian women won three three matches and lost one in the two-day tournament. Led by Vahbiz Bharucha, beat Chinese Taipei 34-0, Guam 29-14 and host Indonesia 21-17, but lost to eventual champions Philippines 12-17.

Meanwhile, Indian men finished fifth in the tournament, winning three matches and losing one. Led by Bikash Khatri, Indian men beat Brunei 33-7, but lost to Singapore 12-27 on the opening day.

 

On the concluding day, Indian men beat Afghanistan 17-12 and Indonesia 24-14 in Plate semifinals and final respectively. The four Odisha players in the Indian women team were: Sumitra Nayak, Hupi Majhi, Meerarani Hembram and Subhalaxmi Barik.

Both the managers of the Indian teams (Manas Kumar Jena and Dhiren Kumar Rout) were also from Odisha.
