  Indian boys emerge SAFF U-15 football champions

Indian boys football team, featuring Odisha duo Ranjan Soren and Aula Siba Prasad  won South Asia Football Federation (SAFF) Under-15 Championship, trouncing Nepal 7-0 in the final at Kalyani Stadium in Kalyani, West Bengal today.

India scored a total of 28 goals without conceded any in the five matches they played in the tournament. The victory also meant that India are now the most successful team in the history of tournament, winning the title for a record third time after previous wins in 2013 and 2017. Captain Anish Majumdar dedicated the victory to a team effort.

 

Hosts India barged into the final, winning all four of their league games and topping the table with full 12 points. India trounced Nepal 5-0, Bhutan 7-0, Sri Lanka 5-0 and Bangladesh 4-0. This is the first time that the championship was held in India.

The next task up ahead for the Indian side is the AFC U-16 Championships 2020 qualifiers, scheduled to take place from September 18-22, 2019. The Indians have been drawn in Group B and will face hosts Uzbekistan, Bahrain and Turkmenistan.

August 27: India (Maheson Singh 39`, Shubho Paul 49`, Himanshu Jangra 32`, 43`, 62`) beat Sri Lanka 5-0.
August 29: India (Himanshu Jangra 29’, 74, 79’, Renedy Meetei 90’) beat Bangladesh 4-0.
August 31 (Final): India (Maheson Singh 15`, Amandeep 42`, Sibajit Singh 45`, Sridarth Nongmeikapam 51`, 76`, 80`, Himanshu Jangra 65’) beat Nepal 7-0.
