21 Aug 2019 BHUBANESWAR

Indian mens hockey team emerged champions in the Olympic Test Event, trouncing New Zealand 5-0 in the lop-sided final match at Oi Hockey Stadium in Tokyo today. With this win, India avenged their 1-2 defeat they suffered against the Kiwis earlier at the league stage.

India earlier won two out of their three league matches to qualify for the final. Led by Harmanpreet Singh, India started their campaign with a thumping 6-0 win over Malaysia. Though they lost to New Zealand in the next match, Indians bounced back into the title race with a 6-3 win over hosts Japan in the last league match.

The 18-member Indian team featured two young players from Odisha _ Nilam Sanjeep Xess and Ashis Topno. Mid-fielder Topno made his senior international debut in the opening match against Malaysia. Defender Xess shone in the match against Japan, converting a penalty corner.
