Poddar, Senapati chosen for IPL auction 2021
12 Feb 2021

Two leading cricketers from Odisha _ Govinda Poddar and Subhranshu Senapati _ have been included in the final auction list of players for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. A total of 292 players will go under the hammer in the IPL auction, which is set to be held in Chennai on February 18.

The base prize of both Poddar and Senapati has been fixed at Rs 20 lakh. Though a total of 1,114 cricketers had registered for the auction, the final list was pruned after the eight franchises submitted their shortlist of players. A total of 164 Indian players, 125 overseas players and three players from Associate Nations will be up for grabs in the aution.

Harbhajan Singh, Kedar Jadhav and eight overseas players – Glenn Maxwell, Steve Smith, Shakib Al Hasan, Moeen Ali, Sam Billings, Liam Plunkett, Jason Roy and Mark Wood – have chosen to be slotted in the highest bracket of Rs 2 crore.

The inclusion of Poddar in the final auction list has come as a surprise for many as his name was not there in the list of six players recommended by Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) last month. The six players were: Subhransu Senapati, Rajesh Dhupar, Rajesh Mohanty, Papu Ray, Gourav Choudhury and Tarani Sa.

Only two cricketers from Odisha _ Biplab Samantaray and Haladhar Das _ have played in the IPL so far. Of course, two more Odia cricketers _ Pragyan Ojha and Abhishek Rout _ featured in the IPL, but on behalf of Hyderabad and Maharashtra cricket associations.
