  Cash award announced for Odisha Olympic medallists

The Government of Odisha today announced cash incentive for participants and medal winners from the State in the Summer Olympic Games, scheduled to be held in Tokyo, Japan from July 23 to August 8, 2021. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced the incentives in a virtual meeting with Olympic bound sportspersons from the State.

According to the announcement, Odisha sportsperson winning gold medal in Tokyo Olympics would be given cash awards of Rs 6 crore. Similarly, silver and bronze medallists would be given Rs 4 crore and Rs 2.25 crore respectively.

The Chief Minister also announced that the Olympic-bound sportspersons of the State would be given financial support of Rs 15 lakh each for their preparation. As many as four sportspersons from the State have qualified to represent in the country in the Tokyo Summer Games.

The four are: woman sprint star Dutee Chand and hockey internationals Birendra Lakra, Amit Rohidas and Deep Grace Ekka. Another woman hockey international, Namita Toppo, is also set to represent the National women hockey team as a quota replacement.

Odisha Government had announced Rs 10 lakh each for six sportspersons of the State, who had qualified for the Rio Olympic Games 2016. The six sportspersons (all women) were: Dutee Chand, Srabani Nanda (both athletics); Deep Grace Ekka, Namita Toppo, Lilima Minz and Sunita Lakra (all hockey).
