Tek Chand carries tricolor in Tokyo Paralympics
24 Aug 2021

Javelin thrower Tek Chand acted as the flagbearer of India at the opening ceremony of the 16th Summer Paralympic Games which was held today at the empty National Stadium in Tokyo, like the Summer Olympic Games, due to pandemic. Tek Chand replaced 2016 Rio Paralympic Games gold medalist Mariyappan Thangavelu as the latter was exposed to a COVID-19 carrier.

During his flight from Delhi to Tokyo, Mariyappan came in close contact with a COVID-19 patient. Mariyappan was tested for COVID-19 over the last six days, and the reports were negative. He will have no trouble training and competing in his event (mens high jump T-63).

Meanwhile, Japanese Emperor Naruhito declared the Paralympics open in the presence of Douglas Emhoff, husband of US Vice President Kamala Harris, International Paralympic Committee President Andrew Parsons and International Olympic President Thomas Bach.

Tokyo Paralympics began with the central theme of `We Have Wings` in a colourful opening ceremony, depicting the endeavour of para athletes to fly high in the face of unimaginable adversities. The opening ceremony featured fireworks in a `Para Airport` - a symbol of diversity and inclusion

The opening ceremony also featured the national flags of the 162 delegations represented, which included the refugee team. In addition, the flag of Afghanistan was carried by a volunteer despite the delegation not being on hand in Tokyo.

Paralympic Games returned to Tokyo in 57 years and Japanese capital became the first ever city to host the Paralympic Games twice. This edition of the Games will feature an unprecedented 4403 athletes. The previous record was 4328 which was set the 2016 Rio Games.
