Tokyo Paralympics: India finish 24th with 19 medals
05 Sep 2021

India finished 24th with a total of 19 medals in the 16th Summer Paralympic Games, which concluded in Tokyo today. The 19 medals featured five gold, eight silver and six bronze. This was best tally for India at a single edition of the Para Games.

India had won four medals at Rio 2016 and four at the 1984 Paralympics. The Tokyo haul is a dramatic and historic rise for the country that had won a total of 12 medals in 11 previous editions of the Games, from 1968 till 2016.

China topped the tally with a total of 207 medals, which included 96 gold, 60 silver and 51 bronze. Great Britain occupied the second position with 124 medals (41 gold, 38 silver, 45 bronze), while the United States of America took the third place with 104 (37 gold, 36 silver, 31 bronze) medals.

India secured one gold and one silver medal on the concluding day. Krishna Nagar bagged the gold in mens singles SH6 class, defeating Chu Man Kai of Hong Kong 21-17, 16-21, 21-17 in the final. This was the second gold for India in badminton after Pramod Bhagat clamed the first in mens singles SL3 category yesterday.

Suhas Yathiraj, an IAS Officer, won the silver medal also in badminton after losing to Lucas Mazur of France in mens singles SL4 final match 21-15, 17-21, 15 -21. Suhas had earlier lost 15-21, 17-21 to Mazur in the group stage as well in Tokyo. India missed out on a bronze medal in mixed doubles SL3-SU5 event as Pramod Bhagat and Palak Kohli went down fighting to Japanese pair of D Fujihara and A Sugino 21-23, 19-21.

Arigato (thank you) and Sayonara (goodbye)… After 12 days of outstanding athleticism, skill and courage, the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games came to an end in a spectacular closing ceremony at the Olympic Stadium.

As the world watched on, the flame was extinguished and the Paralympic flag was ceremoniously lowered and the Governor of Tokyo Koike Yuriko handed it to Anne Hidalgo, the Mayor of Paris, via the International Paralympic President Andrew Parsons. The next Paralympic Games will be held in Paris in 2024.
