Kamalpreet, women hockey team light up dismal day
31 Jul 2021

Woman discus thrower Kamalpreet Singh and women hockey team put inspiring performances at the Tokyo Olympics today, which otherwise proved to be a disappoing day for India with badminton star PV Sindhu, archer Atanu Das, boxer Amit Panghal and Pooja Rani suffering defeats.

Kamalpreet assumed the subriquest ‘Kamalpreet’ as she qualified for the discus throw final with a 64 metre throw on her Olympic debut. The 25-year-old national record holder became the first Indian in athletics to qualify for the final in the ongoing Games.

Kamalpreet also became the 11th Indian and the second woman discus thrower to qualify for an Olympic final (not counting direct finals like long-distance events). But former Asian Games champion Seema Antil-Punia, competing in her fourth Olympics, failed to make the cut with just 60.57m.

In women hockey, India rode on a hat-trick by Vandana Katariya to edge out South Africa 4-3 in their fifth and last Pool-A match at Oi Hockey Stadium and qualified for the quarterfinals. Vandana became the first Indian woman hockey player to score a hat-trick at the Olympics, converting two penalty corners in the 17th and 49th minutes, and slamming one field goal in the 4th minute.

Neha Goyal was the other goal scorer for India, converting a penalty corner in the 32nd minute. India finished fourth in their pool with two wins, three defeats and a total of six points. The quarterfinal berth for India was confirmed only after fifth-placed Ireland lost 0-2 to Great Britain and exited the tournament later in the evening. India will meet Australia on August 2 for a berth in the semifinals.

But India suffered a huge setback as Rio Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu lost her women singles semifinal match against World No 1 Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei 18-21, 12-21 at the Musashino Forest Plaza in Tokyo. Sindhu, however, has an opportunity to secure the bronze medal if she beats He Bingjao of China in the third-place match tomorrow.

Another disappointment came for India in archery as Atanu Das lost to Takaharu Furukawa of Japan 4-6 (25-27, 28-28, 28-27, 28-28, 26-27) in the pre-quarterfinals of men individual event. With this defeat the archery campaign of India at the Tokyo Olympics ended without any medal.

India had two boxers in action today, but both were knocked out. World champion and top seed Amit Panghal was eliminated by Yuberjen Martinez (Colombia), who won their pre-quarterfinal clash 4-1 in the mens flyweight (52kg) category. Similarly, Asian champion Pooja Rani Bohra crashed out the quarterfinal, losing 0-5 to world champion Li Qian of Chine in women middleweight (69-75kg) category.
