  Chopra, Dahiya dazzle; Women hockey team lose in SF

Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra and wrestler Ravi Kumar Dahiya stood out among Indian athletes at the Tokyo Olympics, stormed into finals today. Junior world champion Chopra secured the top position in the qualifying competition with a throw of 86.65 metres in his first attempt.

Chopra has bright chance of winning a medal when the final takes place on August 7. But other Indian javelin thrower Shivpal Singh failed to qualify for the final, finishing 27th with a throw of 76.40 metres in the qualification round.

Dahiya ensured silver medal for India in 57kg freestyle wrestling as he marched into the final with a victory by fall in his exciting semifinal against double World medallist Nurislam Sanayev of Kazakhstan. Trailing 2-9, he bounced back from the jaws of defeat, pinning down his opponent with superb skill and power.

 

Earlier, Dahiya beat Georgi Vangelov of Bulgaria 14-4 in the quarterfinals and Oscar Eduardo Tigreros of Colombia 13-2 in the first round. In the gold-medal match tomorrow, two-time Asian champion Dahiya will take on two-time World champion Zaur Uguev of Russia.

Among other Indian wrestlers, Worlds silver medallist Deepak Punia won two bouts before losing to former World champion David Taylor of the USA 10-0 in the 86kg semifinals. He will face either four-time Worlds bronze medallist Ali Shabanau or European bronze medallist Myles Amine in the bronze medal contest tomorrow.

In women 57kg class, Anshu Malik went down fighting to double Worlds medallist Iryna Kurachkina of Belarus 8-2 in the first round. But she made it to the repechage round as Kurachkina progressed to the final. Anshu will meet Rio Olympics silver medallist Valeria Koblova of Russia in her first repechage match tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Indian woman boxer Lovlina Borgohain settled with bronze medal in welterweight (69kg) category after losing to world champion Busenaz Surmeneli of Turkey in the final 0-5. Borgohain became only the second Indian woman pugilist and third overall, after Vijender Singh (bronze in 2008) and Mary Kom (bronze in 2012) to win an Olympic medal.

Indian suffered the biggest heartbreak of the day when the National women hockey team lost to Argentina 1-2 in their semifinal match at Oi Hockey Stadium early morning. After taking lead in the second minute through a penalty corner convertion by drag-flicker Gurjit Kaur, India conceded one goal each in the second and third quarters to lose the match.

Captain Noel Barrionuevo scored both the goals for Argentina, converting penalty corners in the 18th and 36th minutes. India will now play for bronze medal against Great Britain on August 6.

Indian woman golfer Aditi Ashok hogged limelight at the Tokyo Olympics today as she finished tied-second with American Nelly Korda in the first round with four-under-67 on the first day of the golf competition at the Kasumigaseki Country Club.
