Neeraj wins historic Olympic gold; Bajrang bags bronze
07 Aug 2021

Neeraj Chopra added a golden chapter to the sports history of India, winning the gold medal in men’s javelin throw with an effort of 87.58 metres at the Tokyo Olympics in Tokyo today. Neeraj, thus, became the first Indian athlete to win a track and field gold medal at the Olympic Games.

He also became the second Indian after shooter Abhinav Bindra to win an Olympic gold medal in individual event. Bindra had bagged the first individual Olympic gold at the Beijing Games in 2008. In the javelin final, Chopra recorded the 87.58 metres throw in his second attempt, bettering his first throw of 87.03 metres.

India capped its Tokyo Olympics campaign with a best-ever haul of seven medals, bettering the previous best of six medals at the London Olympics in 2012. The seven medals of the Tokyo Games included one gold, two silver and four bronze. The last day at Tokyo proved to be the best day for India, fetching one gold and one bronze.

Freestyle wrestler Bajrang Punia captured the bronze medal in mens 65kg class, defeating World championships silver medallist Daulet Niyazbekov 8-0 in the third-place bout. He, thus, became the sixth Indian wrestler ever to claim an Olympic medal.

Earlier, Mirabai Chanu (weightlifting) and Ravi Kumar Dahiya (wrestling) secured the two silver medal, while the PV Sindu (badminton), Lovlina Borgohain (boxing) and the men hockey team claimed one bronze each.

Golfer Aditi Ashok also made the last-day campaign memorable for India, finishing fourth in women individual event with a total score of 269 (67-66-68-68). Despite missing out on a medal, Aditi made India proud with her superb performance at the Tokyo Olympics.
