19 Aug 2021

Sports and Youth Services Department (DSYS), Government of Odisha, in association with Odisha Kho-Kho Association, has been conducting state level kho-kho training camps for U-18 boys and girls probables in preparation for the Khelo India Youth Games 2021, scheduled to be held in February, 2022 in Panchkula (Haryana) and other National championships.

According to a press release from DSYS, the first phase of the camp was held in April- June 2021 at the KIIT University campus in Bhubaneswar. The 2nd phase of the camp, featuring 40 probables of the state (20 each for boys and girls) is going on at the same venue since July 8, 2021.

The planning for the camps was preceded by a high-performance workshop for 33 grassroot coaches from 16 districts. This was the first-ever high-performance workshop held for kho-kho coaches in the country. The campers were selected by the Odisha Kho Kho Association.

The probables underwent a fitness test, which was conducted by high-performance specialist, Lt Colonel A Rajesh (Retd) and his team at the Kalinga Stadium Sports Complex, Bhubaneswar. Campers have been provided boarding and lodging in the KISS hostels.

The campers are backed with a complete array of sports science and support staff. Led by Lt Colonel Rajesh, sports exercise science specialist, Dr PSM Chandran, and supported by a nutritionist, physiotherapist, sports psychologist, and a strength and conditioning trainer.

The campers are undergoing training under the watchful eyes of coaches Chintamani Pradhan and Sasmita Ojha for boys and girls respectively. Pradhan is a veteran of numerous national campaigns, while Sasmita holds a diploma in kho-kho and kabbadi from the National Institute of Sports (NIS) in Patiala.

Odisha kho-kho teams have been doing well in National and Zonal championships. Odisha upset Maharashtra in the final at the National Championship for sub-junior girls in Ranchi in 2019. The Odisha boys team finished runners-up behind Maharashtra in the previous National Championship.

In the Khelo India Youth Games, the Odisha U21 women team won two consecutive bronze medals in the 2020 and 2019 editions respectively. Odisha is now aiming to become a top force at the national level and hopes to field many players in the national team when the sport makes its debut in the Asian Games.
