In their first two matches, India hammered Malaysia 9-0, but lost to Asian Games gold medallist Japan 0-2. The 18-member Indian team featured two players from Odisha _ defender Deep Grace Ekka and forward Mariana Kujur. Ace goalkeeper led the team, in the absence of Rani who was undergoing rehabilitation in Bengaluru.
Deep Grace Ekka was the vice-captain of the Indian team which featured a formidable lineup with 16 players who were part of the historic fourth-place finish at the Tokyo Olympic Games 2020.
Top four-teams from this tournament will qualified for the 2022 FIH Womens Hockey World Cup to be held in Spain and Netherlands. In the previous edition held in 2017, India beat China 5-4 in a tense shootout to lift the title.
