  Sr Women Hockey Natls: Odisha crowned as champions

Hockey Association of Odisha (HAO) were crowned as champions of the 12th Hockey India Senior Women National Championship, defeating Hockey Karnataka in the final by 2-0 goals at Dhyanchand Stadium in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh today. Punam Barla and Ashim Kanchan Barla scored the two goals for HAO.

This was the first time that Odisha won the gold medal in the Senior Women National Hockey Championship. While Hockey Karnataka settled for silver medal, Hockey Jharkhand bagged the bronze medal, beating Hockey Haryana 3-2 in the 3rd/4th place match.

In the semifinals yesterday, HAO rode on a hat-trick by vice-captain, Rojita Kujur to demolish Hockey Jharkhand 5-0, while Hockey Karnataka beat Hockey Haryana 2-0.

 

HAO faced stiff fight in the quarterfinals against Hockey Madhya before winning the match 2-0 in shoot out. Play in the regulation time ended in 1-1 draw. HAO qualified for the quarterfinals, winning all three of their Pool-H matches with big margin. Led by Asmita Barla, HAO routed Telangana Hockey 14-0, Kerala Hockey 11-0 and Hockey Himachal 8-0.

Odisha Olympians Sunita Lakra and Lilima Minz came out of retirement to play for the State team after a long gap. Before leaving for Bhopal, the team had interaction with Olympian and HAO president Dilip Kumar Tirkey, State Sports Department joint-secretary Sailendra Kumar Jena and other officials at Kaling Hockey Stadium in Bhubaneswar on 4 May 2022.

13 May 2022: Hockey Association of Odisha (Bimla Barwa 22-FG, Janhabi Pradhan 26-PC, Dipti Lakra 33-FG, 41-PC, 51-PC; Punam Barla 34-FG, Rojita Kujur 46-PS, 54-FG) beat Hockey Himachal 8-0.
14 May (QFs): Hockey Association of Odisha (Neha Lakra 38-FG) beat Hockey Madhya Pradesh (Prashu Singh Parihar 10-FG) 2-0 in shootout (Full time 1-1). Shoot out scorers: Odisha (Neha Lakra, Rojita Kujur).
16 May (SFs): Hockey Association of Odisha (Rojita Kujur 21-PS, 36-FG, 48-FG; Janhabi Pradhan 35-FG, Bharati Ekka 60-FG) beat Hockey Jharkhand 5-0.
17 May (Final): Hockey Association of Odisha (Punam Barla 34-FG, Ashim Kanchan Barla 59-FG) beat Hockey Karnataka 2-0.
