Hockey Pro League: India go down to Belgium 1-2
26 May 2023

India suffered a narrow 1-2 defeat against Olympic champions Belgium in a FIH Mens Pro League 2022-23 match at the Lee Valley Stadium in London today. Playing their first match under new coach Craig Fulton, the Harmanpreet Singh-led Indian team fell behind in the 17th minute after a goal from Thibeau Stockbroekx.

The Men in Blue, who currently sit at the top of the points table, equalised seven minutes later with Mandeep Singh converting a penalty corner. However, with less than two minutes left in the match, Nelson Onana scored the winner for Belgium off a penalty corner.

This was the second defeat in nine matches for India, who, however, retained their place at the top of the table with 19 points. They have won five and drawn two so far. Defender Amit Rohidas is the only player from Odisha representing the current Indian team. India will next meet Great Britain tomorrow.

RESULT:

May 26: Belgium
(Thibeau Stockbroekx 17-PC, Nelson Onana 59-PC) beat India (Manpreet Singh 24-PC) 2-1. PoM: Loick Luypaert (Belgium).
