The new Railway Stadium here at Chandrasekharpur is all set to help the capital city make a much awaited debut in first class cricket by staging the Elite group Ranji Trophy match between Orissa and Punjab from November 23 to 26.
Though the city boasts of a pair of Test cricketers in its rank, it never had the opportunity to host a first class match.
``The completion of the first phase of work, worth Rs 2 crores, the Railway Stadium has become ready to stage the Orissa-Punjab Ranji tie,`` East Coast Railway Sports Association (ECoRSA) predient D K Samantray said at a media conference here on Tuesday.
In the first phase, the stadium has been equipped with four turf pitches, two changing rooms and the boundary wall. The second phase of work with an estimated cost of Rs 3.5 crores has been taken up to add pavillion, gallery and dressing rooms.
``Orissa Cricket Association has sanctioned Rs 1 crore for the development of the stadium and the railway has approached the BCCI for matching grant,`` Samantray said.
``With a radius of 81 metres, the railway stadium is supposed to be the biggest cricket ground in Eastern India,`` he claimed.
