Mayfair Lagoon, the leading star hotel providing accommodation to India and England cricket teams here experienced fear, chaos and confusion throughout today as the fate of the remaining two ODIs at Guwahati and Delhi as well as the subsequent Test series ce following terror attacks in Mumbai suffered a major setback.
When mediapersons assembled at the hotel around 10.00 am to take briefings on the selection of the India team for the last two ODIs, they did not find any official of either team or the cricket board.
Loading and unloading of players` kit bags, heavy security arrangement and the news of the possible cancellation of the rest two ODIs kept the media on tenterhooks while time ticked by.
At around noon when it became clear that the PC on team selection would not be necessary, desperate efforts started to get a statement from the officials any team or BCCI secretary N Srinivasan. But the efforts failed to yield any result as the concerned officials remained busy in a closed-door meeting over the overnight crisis.
The first person from either side, who came out of the hotel rooms was city-born spin bowler Pragyan Ojha. But after remaining busy for some time with his cell phone, he left hotel in a car, declining to answar any question.
The next to emerge was former National selector and incumbent president of Orissa Cricket Association Ranjib Biswal. But he only added to the confusion by saying that the English team`s tour was still on and an official press statement would be released at the BCCI headquarters in a couple of hours.
But sources in the hotel said that Team India players would leave here for Mumbai and Delhi but the English team would stay put in the hotel for another day.
A few minutes later, Virender Sehwag and his Delhi-mate Gautam Gambhir left for airport, escorted by gun-wielding securitymen in another vehicle. But to everybody`s surprise they returned soon. The police officer escorting the duo disclosed that similar terror attack in Delhi forced them to do so.
When the anxiousness reached the peak, some relief came with Srinivasan making a brief official statement before leaving for Chennai with selection committee chief Krishnamachari Srikanth.
``The BCCI has accepted ECB`s request to postpone the last two ODIs. But we expect them to come back for the Test series. Matter related to Twenty20 Champions League is being evaluated,`` he said.
Relieved, the mediapersons were ready to leave the hotel when another incident compelled them to stay back despite feeling very hungry. Sachin Tendulkar, Zaheer Khan and Yuvraj Singh were seen leaving in a car to have lunch at the residence of an OCA office-bearer.
But the Deputy Commissioner of Police suddenly arrived on the spot and stopped the cricketers from leaving the place without prior permission. Embarrassed, the trio went back to their rooms while their host made arrangement to serve the home-made luch at the hotel itself.
After about half an hour, Munaf Patel, Irfan Pathan, his brother Yusuf, Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, Zaheer Khan, coaches Garry Karsten, Venkatesh Prasad and Robin Singh boarded a bus and left for the airport.
As they were leaving ECB`s media relations manager Andrew Walpole announced that the team`s Managing Director Hugh Morris would address a media conference at 4.30 pm.
At the appointed time, Morris expressed ECB`s condolence for the victims of Mumbai terror attack and admitted that the last two ODIs had been `cancelled` on the English board`s request.
He, however, made it clear that ECB had not made any request to cancel the Test series. ``We are in constant touch with our security advisors and would consider all logistics before making any further decision,`` he signed off, ending a day of apprehension, chaos and confusion.
