Parthiv double century adds to Orissa`s owes
21 Dec 2008

GUJARAT skipper Parthiv Patel continued to shine with the bat by scoring his maiden first class double century on the penultimate day of their four-day Elite Group-A Ranji match against hosts Orissa at the East Coast Railway ground here on Saturday. India No 2 wicket-keeper Patel`s 206 (419 balls, 4x14) helped the visitors progress from 210 for three overnight to 382 for eight at stumps and thus increase their first innings lead to 220. Capitalising on several lives, the Ahmedabad-born Patel bettered his previous career best score of 179. Though Gujarat`s extra defensive batting _ they scored 172 runs off 90 overs _ made the day`s play a painful exercise for the spectators, it cleared whatever little doubt they had about their entry into the quarterfinals of the National championship.

Of course, the slow wicket and the slower outfield compelled Patel and his teammates to adopt the extra cautious approach in batting. ``This is not the track where you can play strokes freely. You have to have a lot of patience and graft your way for a big score,`` explained Patel. Orissa bowlers had to toil without much success on this strip which, which had given them a nine-wicket victory over Punjab last month. Pace spearhead Debasis Mohanty and his junior partner Basant Mohanty returned empty handed, while debutant Bibhudutta Panda had to bowl his hearts out to dismiss two batsmen for 101 runs. Left-arm spinner Dhiraj Singh was the other successful bowler for the home side, picking up two wickets for 91 runs. Apart from skipper Patel and opener Priyank Patel (59), Timil Patel tasted success on the track, hitting an unbeaten 38. Surprisingly, Gujarat did not declare their innings despite taking a huge lead. Skipper Patel even made it clear that he had no plan to do so early tomorrow. ``We have confirmed our place in the quarterfinals. Our bowlers are tired. That is why we have decided to continue the innings till the fall of the last wicket and give our batsmen some useful practice,`` he said after the end of the day`s play. Brief scores: Orissa 162 all out in 86 overs vs Gujarat 382 for 5 in 182 overs (Parthiv Patel 206, Priyank Panchal 59, Timil Patel 38 n.o: Dhiraj Singh 2/91, Bibhudutta Panda 2/101).
