Delhi won the overall championship trophy in the 34th National Sports Festival for Women, which concluded at Kalinga Stadium here on Wednesday.
After the conclusion of the three-group festival, Delhi topped the medal/points table to clinch the title.
Of the three groups, the first one, featuring kho-kho, kabaddi, volleyball, gymnastics, was held at Kolkata from November 12-15. Group-III, comprising athletics, badminton, hockey and tennis was conducted at Hamirpur (Himachal Pradesh) from Dec 26-29, 2008.
The Group-I, consisting handball, basketball, table tennis and swimming, completed the festival cycle at Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar, where Delhi (73 points) also claimed the overall trophy in swimming thanks to an authoritative performance by Richa Mishra, who alone bagged nine gold medals. Karnataka (66 points) and West Bengal (48 points) finished second and third respectively behind Delhi.
Punjab finished overall runners-up in the four-day festival, which was conducted jointly by Sports Authority of India and the State Sports Department.
Chhatishgarh secured a `double` by winning gold medals in handball and basketball. In the finals, Chhatishgarh handball team beat Maharashtra 28-16, while their basketball squad got the better of Delhi 78-57. The bronze medals in handball and basketball went to Delhi and Punjab respectively.
In table tennis, Tamil Nadu`s Divya Rajaram took the gold, defeating Swati Sharma (Uttarakhand) 4-3 in the final. K Aiswarya (Tamil Nadu) and Mrigakhee Bardolei (Assam) finished joint third. Earlier, Tamil Nadu also lifted the team title in table tennis, ahead of Uttarakhand.
Orissa Governor Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare gave away the trophies at the closing function.
