Orossa asserted supremacy in the first National Gateball Championship with the state`s `A` and `B` teams emerging champions and runners-up respectively at Satyanagar PHD IB Park in Bhubaneswar todayt..
The five-member Orissa-A team, comprising Manoranjan Mishra, Dwaipayan Patnaik, Arvind Chhotray, Guru Prasad Tripathy and Spandan Mishra, beat Orissa-B in the final by 17-9 points.
Manoranjan Mishra and Arvind Chhotray scored full five points for the champion side. Teenager Spandan Mishra, also of Orissa-A was adjudged the player of the championship with 16 points in his kitty.
Earlier in the semifinals, Orissa-A defeated Himachal Pradesh 15-11, while Orissa-B, comprising Sanjay Patnaik (A), Sanjay Patnaik (B), Biswa Ranjan Mishra, Arijit Mallick and Ranjan Nanda, got the better of Chhatishgarh by identical margin.
Rajya Sabha Member Baijayant Panda and Indian Gateball Association president Dr S K Tamotia gave away the trophy and prizes at the closing ceremony.
