Yuki wins Australian Open junior title
31 Jan 2009

Delhi teenager Yuki Bhambri created history by becoming the first Indian to clinch the Australian Open junior boys’ singles title, defeating German Alexandros-Ferdinandos Georgoudas 6-3, 6-1 at the Melbourne Park today. But Mahesh Bhupathi’s seven-year Grand Slam title drought in men’s doubles continued after the Indian and his Bahamian partner Mark Knowles squandered a one-set lead to go down to Americans Bob and Mike Bryan 6-2, 5-7, 0-6. The 16-year-old top seed Yuki, took just 57 minutes to pocket his first Grand Slam singles title, becoming the fourth Indian to do so in the process. Other Indians in the elite list are Ramanathan Krishnan (1954 junior Wimbledon champion), his son Ramesh Krishnan (1979 Wimbledon and French Open junior champion) and Leander Paes (1990 junior Wimbledon and junior US Open champion). Bhupathi last won a men’s doubles grand slam title in 2002 when he teamed up with max Mirnyi to lift the US Open. He has never won the Australian Open men’s doubles title and his other three Grand Slam titles in the event have come at the 1999 French Open and Wimbledon and the 2001 French Open. All three of these titles came with his now-estranged partner Leander Paes. WILLIAMS WINS WOMEN’S CROWN: Second seed Serena Williams thrashed third seed Dinara Safina 6-0, 6-3 today to win the Australian Open women’s singles crown - her 10th Grand Slam title - and return to the No 1 ranking. It was Williams’ 20th overall Grand Slam title. She won her eighth women’s doubles crown with sister Venus on Friday and has two mixed-doubles championships.
