  Orissa overcome Assam: meet TN in pre-quarters

Medium pacer Preetamjit Das and middle-order bat Rashmi Ranjan Das came up with impressive performance to enable Orissa beat Assam by 29 runs in their last league match of the East Zone Vijay Hazare Trophy Cricket Tournament at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata today. Rashim slammed an unbeaten 96 (98 balls, 4x12, 6x1) and added 102 runs for the sixth wicket with Rakesh Mohanty (37) to help Orissa compile a competitive total of 245 for seven in 50 overs. Preetamjit bagged four wickets for 43 runs as Orissa dismissed the opposition for 216 in 47.4 overs. Deepak Sharma top scored for Assam with an 87-ball 88, which included eight fours and a six. Orissa gained four points from the tie to finish second in the zonal table with 13 points from four matches. Bengal won the zonal title with four wins and 18 points. Jharkhand finished third with seven points, while Tripura (2) and Assam (0) occupied the fourth and bottom positions respectively. Orissa next meet Tamil Nadu in the first pre-quarterfinal on February 28, while Bengal play the fourth quarterfinal on March 4. Brief scores: Orissa 245/7 in 50 overs (Rashmi Ranjan Das 96, Natraj Behera 49, Rakesh Mohanty 37: DS Goswamy 3/36) beat Assam 216/10 in 47.4 overs (Deepak Sharma 88, DS Goswamy 37, S Purakayastha 32: Pritamjeet Das 4/43, Debasis Mohanty 2/24, AK Sahoo 2/37)by 29 runs.
