Bhubaneswar lived upto its reputation as strongest force in domestic football for women in Orissa by emerging champions in the PC Behera Memorial Inter-District Tournament today.
In the keenly contested final at Saila Bala Women`s College ground in Cuttack, Bhubaneswar edged out Sambalpur 4-2, via penalty shoot out after play in the regulation time ended in goalless draw.
The victorious team was given a cash prize of Rs 10,000 and the runners-up Rs 5,000.
Bijay Laxmi Sahoo, Ranjita Mohanty, Sasmita Mallick and Thunki Munda were named as best defender, best goalkeeper, best forward and best midfielder respectively.
Earlier in the semifinals, Bhubaneswar blanked Kendrapara 4-0, while Sambalpur pipped host Cuttack 1-0.
With 10 out of 23 teams remaining absent, the inter-district tournament lost a lot of importance.
Introduction of women`s inter-district cricket tournament considerable reduced the importance of the football event.
